Our experts provide natural playground design services across England, Scotland, and Wales, utilising high-quality, natural materials that enhance both safety and sustainability. As experienced play equipment designers, we carefully select materials, such as timber, to ensure our school, public, and farm playgrounds are durable, low-maintenance, and budget-friendly, whether you’re based in Birmingham, Colchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, or elsewhere.
Natural playground materials not only reduce the risk of splinters or trapped fingers but also support our belief that play should be as close to nature as possible. Our commitment to quality and thoughtful design ensures every playground we create is safe, long-lasting, and inspiring for children and educators alike. Our experts love working with timber because:
Simply put, children are far more likely to build dens or engage in nature play on timber than on cold, hard steel. As experienced play equipment designers, we understand the importance of selecting materials that children naturally connect with.
While some may worry about splinters, we carefully sand all timber surfaces before installation to ensure a smooth finish. Timber naturally expands and contracts in response to changes in moisture, which can cause small, harmless splinters over time. These can be easily smoothed with sandpaper during routine playground maintenance.
All our softwood timber is sustainably sourced and pre-treated (class 4 grade where possible) to protect against rot, insects, and fungal decay. Posts are further protected with bitumastic paint and expansion collars. Timber will age to a silvery grey and may develop minor surface splits – these are normal and won’t affect safety or strength unless they exceed specific limits. Larger cracks can be filled with mastic.
We are always happy to talk about your ideas and answer any questions you have about how we work, or offer advice on how best to successfully deliver your project. We can also talk through the finance options available to help spread the costs.
