At Theories Landscapes Limited, all natural play areas completed by our CRB-checked team are validated by an independent risk assessment in the form of a post-installation inspection report. This ensures that the design and materials comply with British and European standards EN1176 for playground equipment and EN1177 for impact-absorbing playground surfacing. On this page, we cover three key aspects of playground safety:

If you’re a head teacher, you are responsible for ensuring the safety of your outdoor play areas. Apart from a daily visual check and quarterly written checks (normally carried out by the premises manager), we recommend you commission an annual inspection report. Our team can do this for you, and we relish the opportunity to revisit our projects to see what is successful and what, if any, problems have arisen. In this way, we learn and refine our playground design and construction techniques. We can carry out all repairs, remedial work, and maintenance tasks if desired.
An annual report will comprise an analysis of your natural play areas, together with a risk assessment and costed maintenance recommendations. We’ll endeavour to carry out any minor repairs that can be done at the same time. Costs are £250/report when our team are commissioned.
These reports will provide significant defence if there is an accident in the playground – without one, your position could be considerably weakened. In our experience, a regular inspection regime can also significantly reduce maintenance costs.
It depends on the situation and your ambition. Play is a complex and fascinating activity, and it needs to be safe. We hope that our 30 years of experience add a more sophisticated palette of options than the traditional array of catalogue playground equipment. The careful design of our playgrounds improves the overall safety of your playground, ensuring that the correct materials, surfaces, and plantings are used throughout.
Efforts to remove all risk from play, largely due to parental concerns and fear of litigation, are increasingly viewed as unrealistic and counterproductive. Risk is essential to play, and overly safe environments can lead children to create their own hazards out of boredom.
Rather than eliminate risk, we deliberately design an appropriate level of risk. This does not mean that accidents will happen on our natural play areas – it simply means that if properly used and supervised, children will be able to experience and manage risk responsibly. Risk management is an essential skill, and without the opportunity to develop it in practice, that lesson won’t be learnt until it’s too late.
We are always happy to talk about your ideas and answer any questions you have about how we work, or offer advice on how best to successfully deliver your project. We can also talk through the finance options available to help spread the costs.
